Making Time for Things That Matter

This week, what felt like a thousand new problems showed up on my to-do list.

For example, while my materials and curriculum at my teaching position are coming together, I still feel that there is not enough of a pathway paved through our textbooks and activities to keep my students busy. Some of my students are working diligently to complete the work I have assigned to them, and I need to have more material prepared before they are completely finished.

As another example, a mysterious source of moisture has at times appeared in my garage. I would walk into my garage and find that the floor had a patch of wet concrete perhaps ten feet by fifteen feet. I did not know the source at first, and thought that it was simply moisture collecting from the warm air onto the cold concrete floor. To clean it up, I used several rolls of paper towels, which cost a pretty penny. This week, however, the source of water in the garage revealed itself.

The rain had been pouring down for about two days. While I was sitting in my armchair near my desktop computer, I saw a flash of light out of the corner of my eye. It was the light from the desktop computer screen reflecting off a drop of water falling from the ceiling. I looked up and saw that the chimney flashing had pulled away from the rest of the ceiling and water was dripping from the edge of the flashing.

Still more tasks appeared while I was cleaning our car. I was throwing away trash from the foot of the seats where my children sit and I noticed an odd smell. After pulling up the rubber floor mats, I saw that a few water bottles had leaked their water underneath the rubber mats and had the water had mixed in with the ground up crumbs from the food that my children had spilled since the last time I had cleaned the car. This had created a paste that was perfect for mold to use as a food source, and there were green and white mold spots on the black carpet. There could even be black mold in the carpet floor, but I wouldn’t be able to tell because of the color of the carpet.

The list goes on and on, and if I were to attempt to solve all these problems at once, it would probably take several days of full-time cleaning and repairing.

What did I do?

I decided not to worry about any of it. I’m getting too old and there’s always some emergency that’s calling for my undivided attention. I did the best I could to clean up the initial mess, and then I drove down to go camping with some of my co-workers in Tolsona. The trouble can wait. Instead, I had a fun weekend of sitting around the campfire, listening to stories and playing card games.

Artificial Intelligence Transparency Report

No artificial intelligence was used for the writing or performing portion of this blog post.

I used Google’s Gemini AI to help me write a sql script to export my database records of my practice sessions into a .csv format, and convert that table into the above HTML table, as seen above.

How You Can Help

I need your help to become established as a teacher and storyteller.

Here is a link to a blog post that describes how a supportive reader can help me in my quest.
