Articulating Why I’m Posting My Vocal Journey Online
I’m learning to sing. I don’t know how to sing. My singing is frequently atrocious. I’m posting it online because I’m forty-three years old and I don’t care.
A Mysterious Resident in the House
Sounds From the Kitchen at Night
While laying down to sleep in my bed, I could hear noises coming from the kitchen. There was a scraping and scurrying sound that could only be coming from a living creature.
I went to investigate, but could not see anything moving in the kitchen, and the noises stopped when the pounding of my own feet on the kitchen floor acted as an alert to whatever creature was stirring in the night.
A few minutes later I gave up on searching for the source and fell quickly asleep, then forgot about the matter for a few days.
Dripping Water on the Wood Base Board
The pipes underneath the kitchen sink were leaking when we bought the house.
The leaks were certainly not the source of the scurrying noise I had heard a few nights ago, but the matter of dripping water needed to be handled.
I fixed most of the leaks by installing a new kitchen faucet and using plumber’s teflon tape for all the connectors.
However, there was (and is) still a leak somewhere near the turn valve for the hot water. I’ve tried repairing this leak, but so far have not had any luck. That’s a story for another time.
Setting aside the matter of the source of the leak, the end result is that this area of the pipes underneath my sink has been leaking for an unknown amount of time.
The smell of mold was becoming quite noticeable, so I set about trying to resolve the issue.
I ripped out all the plastic and painted-hard-wood coverings underneath the sink that were meant to catch water leaks. They weren’t working and water had seeped through their cracks.
Upon ripping them out, there was green mold coating the thick wooden baseboard.
I needed to find out whether the mold had penetrated underneath the cabinet baseboards and had gone to the actual floorboards.
With a drill and a two-inch hole saw I cut a large hole in the baseboard. The friction caused a wisp of grey smoke and there was a smell of burning wood.
With a popping noise, the hole saw broke through the kitchen cabinet baseboards and I pulled the drill and hole saw back to look into the sealed compartment below the cabinetry.
My view was surprising: all I could see was a tightly packed nest of pinecones.
How could pinecones turn up underneath my enclosed kitchen cabinetry?
With a six-inch hole saw I continued cutting large holes in a few places in the cabinetry to see how far this pinecone nest extended. The entire area underneath cabinetry turned out to be full of perhaps a hundred pinecones.
I took a shop vacuum and plunged the vacuum hose into the six-inch gaps I had created, sucking out all the pinecones until I could see the floorboards clearly.
This allowed me to get an answer to my initial question: the floor boards seemed to have a small amount of mold, but they appeared to be salvageable.
However, my new question about the mysterious resident underneath my sink remains unanswered.
Noises in the Bathroom
While attempting to go to sleep a few nights ago, as I lay there trying to let my mind drift away, there came some scurrying and scratching noises.
This time, the noises were not coming from kitchen cabinetry, but rather from the cabinetry in the bathroom.

I used Google’s Gemini AI to help me write a sql script to export my database records of my practice sessions into a .csv format, and convert that table into the above HTML table, as seen above.
